Although the riparian buffers on the OESF are wider and more complex than buffers prescribed in the Forest and Fish Agreement for Washington State, DNR wishes to utilize the experimental capacity of the OESF to investigate alternative management options that could result in a forested landscape that more closely resembles the range of conditions produced by a natural disturbance regime, while at the same time continuing to fulfill trust obligations for timber harvest and protecting sensitive stocks of salmon and trout. The opportunity for collaboration between the DNR and the Pacific Northwest Research Station of the USDA …

Deposition of PM2.5 Sulfate in the Spring on Urban Forests in Beijing, China

Water-soluble ions such as sulfate may have great impacts on atmospheric pollution. To determine the deposition effect of PM2.5 sulfates, the major PM2.5 constituents, in the forest canopy in Beijing, China, an investigation was carried out in an urban forest, Olympic Forest Park, and a suburban forest, Jiufeng National Forest Park. We measured the vertical distributions of sulfate by using mon...

Deposition Velocity of PM2.5 in the Winter and Spring above Deciduous and Coniferous Forests in Beijing, China

To estimate the deposition effect of PM2.5 (particle matter with aerodynamic diameter <2.5 µm) in forests in northern China, we used the gradient method to measure the deposition velocity of PM2.5 during the winter and spring above a deciduous forest in Olympic Forest Park and above a coniferous forest in Jiufeng National Forest Park. Six aerosol samplers were placed on two towers at each site ...

Landscape genetic structure of coastal tailed frogs (Ascaphus truei) in protected vs. managed forests.

Habitat loss and fragmentation are the leading causes of species' declines and extinctions. A key component of studying population response to habitat alteration is to understand how fragmentation affects population connectivity in disturbed landscapes. We used landscape genetic analyses to determine how habitat fragmentation due to timber harvest affects genetic population connectivity of the ...
